Chiropractic Medicine and it’s Relationship to Alzheimer’s Patient Care

Did you know that Alzheimer’s disease is the most common mental disease affecting senior citizens in America? With November being National Alzheimer’s Awareness month, it’s time we bring awareness to this epidemic and what we can do to help prevent it or slow it down.

Chiropractic Medicine and its Relationship to Alzheimers Patient CareIn short, Alzheimer’s affects the brain; the disease damages and kills brain cells. While there is no single determinant cause to Alzheimer’s, research shows a variety of factors including genetics, environmental conditions and lifestyle as the culprit to the disease. However, there are some studies showing the benefits of chiropractic care to the prevention, deceleration and care of Alzheimer’s.

Doctors of chiropractic medicine are trained to identify and treat problems of the central nervous system and the brain is a major organ of the central nervous system. Chiropractors advocate a healthy lifestyle, including diet, exercise and supplemental intake. Exercise has been proven to help in preventing memory loss, gingko will increase blow flow to the brain and foods with HDL cholesterol (the good kind) can benefit central nervous system impairments. In addition to those, it has been shown that regular adjustments from a chiropractor can improve blood flow to the brain. Some chiropractors theorize that maintaining spinal health prevents damage to the neural canal.

If a loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, therapeutic massage has been shown to bring relief and improvements to those affected. While there is little scientific evidence of massage decelerating the disease, it does brief relief by helping them relax and sleep better. For some, the human touch and use of lotions can help with blood flow and circulation. A Canadian study in 2000 showed that Alzheimer’s patients who received regular therapeutic massage were calmer and slept better. However, just as with anyone, some individuals don’t enjoy being touched and thus massage did not benefit those patients.

While there is little research showing the benefits of chiropractic medicine on preventing and decelerating Alzheimer’s, there is some evidence of it. Chiropractic medicine is all about a healthy lifestyle and a healthy lifestyle has been shown to impede the symptoms of Alzheimer’s. If you or a loved one has a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s encourage them to seek a local chiropractor to receive regular adjustments or therapeutic massages.
